Pneumococcus is the pathogen responsible for pneumococcal infections. It is a Gram-positive bacterium characterized by a polysaccharide capsule. Different combinations of these polysaccharides form various serotypes of pneumococcus, with over 100 serotypes identified to date.
When a person experiences a cold or has a weakened immune system, pneumococcus can rapidly multiply and invade the respiratory tract or bloodstream, leading to severe diseases such as pneumonia, sepsis (bacteremia), and meningitis. These conditions are collectively referred to as invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD). Children and the elderly often experience more severe symptoms when affected by IPD.
Pneumococcus primarily resides in the nasal passages and throats of healthy individuals, especially prevalent among children. In certain situations, these bacteria can cause infections. The main transmission routes for pneumococcus include:
Contact with Contaminated Objects: Touching objects or surfaces contaminated with pneumococcus can also lead to the spread of the bacteria.
Due to the similarity of early symptoms to those of a common cold, pneumococcal infections can easily be overlooked, leading to delays in seeking medical attention. Once they progress to invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD), such as meningitis or bacteremia, the condition can become severe and potentially fatal.
Vaccination with the pneumococcal 15-valent conjugate vaccine is crucial because pneumococcal infections can lead to severe complications, including death. According to data from the Hong Kong Department of Health in 2023, pneumonia has become the second leading cause of death in the region, with 11,334 fatalities reported, primarily among the elderly and immunocompromised individuals. Furthermore, serotype 3 is a major cause of invasive pneumococcal disease in Hong Kong. Therefore, receiving the 15-valent pneumococcal vaccine can effectively reduce the risk of infection, protect high-risk populations, and decrease mortality rates.
