What is HPV?

HPV is a group of viruses that include more than 100 genotypes. Around 40 of these viruses infect human genital organs (both male and female).

HPV infections can cause certain types of cancers including:

  • cervical, vaginal and vulvar cancers in women,
  • penile cancer in men, and
  • anal cancers in both men and women.
  • Anal cancer, throat cancer, and genital warts in both sexes

HPV vaccine prevents infection from the HPV types that cause over 90% of these cancers.

HPV is spread through intimate skin-to-skin or sexual contact.

HPV infections are so common that nearly all men and women will get at least one type of HPV at some time in their lives.

Most HPV infections go away by themselves within 2 years. But sometimes HPV infections will last longer and can cause cancers later in life.

Some females with persistent high-risk HPV infection in the cervix will develop pre-cancerous cell changes, and some may progress to cancer over years.

What is Cervical Cancer?

Cervical cancer is a kind of cancer that starts in the cervix, which is the lower part of womb. It is an invasive tumour affecting the cervix. ‘Invasive’ means that cancer cells can spread from the surface of cervix into the deeper tissues, which in turn may spread to adjacent structures (e.g. vagina, nerve, pelvis and kidney). If not detected early, they will finally spread to distant organs such as liver, lung and brain.

Cervical cancer is by far the most common cancer associated with persistent HPV infection. Nearly all cases of cervical cancer can be attributable to persistent HPV infection.

Cervical cancer is preceded by the development of abnormal cells in the cervix. If left untreated, these pre-cancerous cells may change and become cervical cancer over five to ten years. Women with pre-cancerous lesions do not have symptoms. Cervical screening aims to prevent cervical cancer by detecting and treating these abnormalities. Treatment of pre-cancerous lesions has a cure rate that is close to 100%.

How to prevent Cervical Cancer?

  • Regular cervical cancer screening
  • Get HPV vaccination, the best uptake is before initiation of sexual activity
  • Practice safer sex
  • Do not smoke

Is Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine safe and effective?

HPV vaccine has the potential to prevent more than 90% of HPV-attributable cancers.

HPV vaccines have been used worldwide for many years. Clinical trials and post-marketing surveillance have shown that HPV vaccines have no obvious/ abnormal serious side effects. Common side effects are mild and transient. They are similar to those from other vaccinations, such as soreness and swelling at the injection site, fever, headache and nausea.
