👩‍⚕️ What is Menopause?

Menopause is a natural biological transition in a woman’s life, marking the end of reproductive age as ovarian function declines and menstruation permanently stops. Medically, it is defined as the absence of menstrual periods for 12 consecutive months, not caused by any medical condition.

Menopause typically occurs between ages 45 and 55, though some women may experience early menopause before age 40, or later menopause beyond age 58.

Menopause can sometimes happen earlier naturally, or due to surgery to remove the ovaries or the uterus, cancer treatments, a genetic reason or other unknown reasons. Menopause happens when you have not had your period for 12 months.

🔄 Stages of Menopause:

1️⃣ Perimenopause
The transitional phase leading up to menopause, which can last for several months or years. During this period, hormone levels fluctuate significantly, causing irregular periods, hot flashes, and emotional changes.

2️⃣ Menopause
This refers to the point when a woman has not had a menstrual period for 12 consecutive months. Ovulation ceases, and estrogen levels drop significantly.

3️⃣ Postmenopause
The years following menopause. The body adjusts to lower hormone levels, but women must remain vigilant about long-term health risks such as osteoporosis and cardiovascular disease.

🧠 Why Does Menopause Cause Physical & Emotional Changes?

The changes are largely due to hormonal imbalance, particularly the decline in estradiol (estrogen) and progesterone levels, which affect multiple systems in the body:

  • Neurotransmitters in the brain (impacting mood, sleep)
  • Skin and mucous membranes (leading to dryness, vaginal thinning)
  • Bones and cardiovascular system (increased risk of osteoporosis, high blood pressure)

According to a study by the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) in May 2022, fluctuations in estrogen during menopause are directly linked to changes in cholesterol, triglycerides, and fatty acids — increasing the risk of cardiovascular disease.

  • Breasts and reproductive system (reduced libido, menstrual irregularities)

Each woman experiences menopause differently. Some go through noticeable changes, while others have more subtle symptoms. However, early hormone testing provides a clearer understanding of one’s health, enabling better long-term planning.

🔍 Common Menopausal Symptoms Include:

  • Irregular or absent menstrual periods
  • Hot flashes and night sweats
  • Mood swings, anxiety, or depression
  • Poor sleep quality
  • Declining bone density, increased fracture risk
  • Decreased libido, vaginal dryness
  • Reduced memory and concentration

🧪 Menopause Check-Up: What’s Included?

Health Gene Medical’s Menopause Check-up uses a simple blood test to evaluate the following:

🔸 Hormonal Panel (4 items):

  1. Estradiol (E2) → Assesses estrogen levels to determine menopausal status.
  2. Follicle-Stimulating Hormone (FSH) → Elevated during menopause; key for assessing ovarian function.
  3. Luteinizing Hormone (LH) → Works alongside FSH to evaluate endocrine system changes.
  4. Prolactin → High levels may be associated with mood swings or irregular periods and indicate pituitary function.

🔸 Bone Health Panel (2 items):

  1. Calcium
→ Essential for bone strength and nerve function; low levels can signal increased osteoporosis risk.
  2. Vitamin D (25–OH Vitamin D)
→ Helps the body absorb calcium and form strong bones; crucial for bone health in postmenopausal women.

FAQMenopause Check-Up

  1. 🩺 Who needs a menopause check-up?

This test is recommended for women aged 40+, especially those experiencing:

  • Irregular periods
  • Hot flashes, night sweats, heart palpitations
  • Mood swings, insomnia
  • Bone pain or osteoporosis concerns
Even without symptoms, hormone and bone health monitoring is important after 40.
  1. 💉 How is the test performed?

The test is a simple blood draw, no fasting required. It takes about 10–15 minutes and covers E2, FSH, LH, Prolactin, Calcium, and Vitamin D.

  1. 📃 When will I get my results? Will a doctor explain them?

You’ll typically receive your report within7-10 working days. The report will be explanied by our GP doctor or medical staff.

  1. 🧪 What does it mean if my hormone levels are abnormal?

Abnormal levels may indicate perimenopause or hormonal imbalance. Early detection helps you take action through diet, exercise, or medical consultation.

  1. 🦴 Why are calcium and vitamin D important in this test?

As estrogen drops, calcium absorption weakens — leading to osteoporosis. Monitoring these levels helps guide supplementation and bone health planning.

  1. 💻 Can I book the test online?

Yes! You can purchase and schedule your appointment directly on this page. Our team will follow up to confirm your test arrangement.
